Stargates are one of the most mysterious objects in the Galaxy. Their origin is unknown, but the best supported theory is that they were made by the Ancients.
They are huge, enormous structures, often up to a thousand feet across, and made of Deluvian graphite coated steel.
Interstellar travel
The principle behind a Stargate is very simple: they work by ripping through hyperspace from one Stargate to another, therefore creating a tunnel that leads between them. This, however, is a very difficult process, as the exact coordinates of the receiving Stargate must be known, otherwise you will come out as scrap metal on the other side. Hyperspace coordinates are beyond human understanding, therefore the only way for interstellar travel for humans is to use astrogation chips stolen from the Mantis.
The Technology Behind The Stargate
Hyperspace, the 5th dimension, Einstein-Rosen Bridges, the sinkhole, it has many names. All of them are names for the rift in space formed by a wormhole opening, and that's how the stargates work. It is not known exactly how this process goes, however, as any attempts to salvage or further investigate the Stargate always has lead to disabling it beyond repair, and the thick Deluvian shell jams scanners. However, scientists believe that the Stargates work in the same way as the means of travels with Mantis Motherships, such as the Mantis Behemoth, or even larger classes. Some small progress has been made in understanding them, but every salvaged part is badly damaged and the scientists are far from a conclusion, partly because the Mantis prioritize striking at human research facilities.
When anything more complex than an atom travels trough the Stargate, the ship is dematerialized and rematerialized on the other side, strangely giving the pilot a feel of euphoria. This has lead to a phenomenom known as Gate Jumpers, people who are addicted to jumping trough gates.
