Reference to Real Life

From Pirate Galaxy Wiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Pirate Galaxy is an exhilirating and fast paced game set in the future. However one must not forget that part of it is science-fiction and part reality, as it is set in the future, to which all clocks turn to. Slowly. As such, one can find many references to real life, in the game itself. This article is an exploration of this relationship!

Vega system preview.jpg Vega System

Vega (α Lyr, α Lyrae, Alpha Lyrae) is the brightest star in the constellation Lyra, the fifth brightest star in the night sky and the second brightest star in the northern celestial hemisphere, after Arcturus. It is a relatively close star at only 25 light-years from Earth, and, together with Arcturus and Sirius, one of the most luminous stars in the Sun's neighborhood. Vega has been extensively studied by astronomers, leading it to be termed "arguably the next most important star in the sky after the Sun."[8] Vega was the northern pole star around 12,000 BC and will be so again around AD 13,727 when the declination will be +86°14'.[9] Vega was the first star other than the Sun to be photographed and the first to have its spectrum recorded. It was one of the first stars whose distance was estimated through parallaxmeasurements. Vega has served as the baseline for calibrating the photometric brightness scale, and was one of the stars used to define the mean values for the UBV photometric system.

Antares system preview.jpg Antares System

Antares (α Scorpii, α Sco, Alpha Scorpii) is a red supergiant star in the Milky Way galaxy and the sixteenth brightest star in the nighttime sky (sometimes listed as 15th brightest, if the two brighter components of the Capella quadruple star system are counted as one star). Along with Aldebaran,Spica, and Regulus it is one of the four brightest stars near the ecliptic. Antares is a slow variable star with an average magnitude of +1.09.

Comparison between the redsupergiant Antares and the Sun, shown as the tiny dot toward the upper right. The black circle is the size of the orbit of Mars. Arcturus is also included in the picture for size comparison. Antares is a class M supergiant star, with a radius of approximately 800 times that of the sun; if it were placed in the center of our solar system, its outer surface would lie between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. Antares is approximately 600 light-years (180 pc) from our solar system. Its visual luminosity is about 10,000 times that of the Sun, but because the star radiates a considerable part of its energy in the infrared part of the spectrum, thebolometric luminosity equals roughly 65,000 times that of the Sun. The mass of the star is calculated to be 15 to 18 solar masses.[3] Its large size and relatively small mass give Antares a very low average density.

Gemini system preview.jpg Gemini System

Gemini is one of the constellations of the zodiac. Its name is Latin for "twins", and it is associated with the twins Castor and Pollux in Greek mythology. Its symbol is Taurus to the west and Cancer to the east, with Auriga and Lynx to the north and Monoceros and Canis Minor to the south.

AND HERES THE INTERESTING PART :

The brightest stars in Gemini are Castor and Pollux. Although Castor has the Bayer designation Alpha, it is actually the second brightest in the constellation after Pollux. Castor is a sextuple star system; Pollux has an extrasolar planet revolving around it, as do two other stars, HD 50554, and HD 59686. Another noteworthy star is Mekbuda (ζ Gem), a supergiant with a radius that is 60 times solar, making it approximately is 220,000 times the size of the Sun. (dont we have twin stars too in pirate galaxy in gemini system?)

Mizar system preview.jpg Mizar System

Mizar (ζ UMa, ζ Ursae Majoris) is a quadruple system of two binary stars in the constellation Ursa Major and is the second star from the end of the Big Dipper's handle. Its apparent magnitude is 2.23 and its spectral class is A1V. Mizar's name comes from the Arabic مئزر mīzar, meaning a waistband or girdle.) With normal eyesight one can make out a faint companion just to the east, named Alcor or 80 Ursae Majoris. Alcor is of magnitude 3.99 and spectral class A5V.

Drac.jpg Draconis System

Iota Draconis (ι Dra, ι Draconis) is an orange giant star located 103 light-years (32 pc) away in the constellation Draco. A visually unremarkable star ofapparent magnitude 3.31, it has recently been discovered to have a planet.[1]\

Noimagesystem.jpg Sirius System

Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky. With a visual apparent magnitude of −1.46, it is almost twice as bright as Canopus, the next brightest star. The name "Sirius" is derived from the Ancient Greek Σείριος Seirios ("glowing" or "scorcher"). The star has the Bayer designation Alpha Canis Majoris (α CMa). What the naked eye perceives as a single star is actually a binary star system, consisting of a white main sequence star of spectral type A1V, termed Sirius A, and a faint white dwarf companion of spectral type DA2, termed Sirius B. The distance separating Sirius A from its companion varies between 8.1 and 31.5 AU.[16] Sirius appears bright because of both its intrinsic luminosity and its proximity to Earth. At a distance of 2.6 parsecs (8.6 ly), the Sirius system is one of Earth's near neighbors. Sirius A is about twice as massive as the Sun and has an absolute visual magnitude of 1.42. It is 25 times more luminous than the Sun[6] but has a significantly lower luminosity than other bright stars such as Canopus or Rigel. The system is between 200 and 300 million years old.[6] It was originally composed of two bright bluish stars. The more massive of these, Sirius B, consumed its resources and became a red giant before shedding its outer layers and collapsing into its current state as a white dwarf around 120 million years ago.[6]
