Cryonite is the most valuable resource in the galaxy. Both the Mantis and the Humans are after it. Because of its high value, it is used to manufacture ships, technology, and is also used as a reward by the Humans for completing different missions or similar things.
Cryonite is a very hard mineral, competing even with the most experimental alloys, but sadly, making a ship made of cryonite would be very expensive, considering the density the Cryonite needs to be compressed to for being able to hold together the ship.
Cryonite has a distinctive green color. I also emits an almost undetectable, and almost completely unharmful ´´Cryonite Radiation´´. In some rare cases, mantis ships Vlad's Impaler, has been known to use cryonite radiation emitters to enhance the ship's power. It is sadly beyond the technological reach of the humans.
Mantis
To the Mantis, Cryonite is the basis of their system. They seek Cryonite on every rock they can find floating around in space, and send huge ships known as Harvesters on planets which have confirmed Cryonite deposits on them. These huge ships roam the planets, sucking out the Cryonite deposits for the Mantis. Even though these ships are unguarded in systems with low Cryonite deposits, the Mantis install weapons on the Harvesters that are on planets filled with Cryonite.
Humans
For the Humans, Cryonite is the only currency they accept. They also award their pilots with Cryonite for completing different tasks. Cryonite, on human starbases, is also used to buy new ships or manufacture new technology. Unlike the Mantis, though, Humans do not "rob" planets of their precious deposits of this green-glowing crystal - they get it from killing and looting it from dead Mantis units. Even though Humans have looted Mantis collector technology, it's not enough to crisp through the planet's surface and take Cryonite directly from the underground.
Industrial Uses
Cryonite is often like silicone was in less complex technology during the 20th, and 21th century. It is vital part in everything from Microchips controlling the repair nanobots in a ship, to the mighty MPC's (pulse cannons) with the power to destroy a larger asteroid. When a ship is destroyed, some of the cryonite in the ship will be damaged beyond repair. You will have to replace the cryonite with cryonite from your own bank. Eventually, you can collect the dropped cryonite, and get some of it back. If you do not have enough cryonite in your bank, or if you are flying the starter ship ( AnIn-1300 Light Transport ), The brotherhood will replace the lost cryonite.
